MOST POPULAR EXP0RTS FROM PAKISTAN TO HONG KONG
Pakistan is a young nation but with centuries old tradition of trade and commerce. The Indus Valley Civilization which flourished 4500 years ago (and was spread over what is now Pakistan) had an active riverain trade amongst its cities and through sea going vessels had regular trade links with Egypt and Mesopotamia. Later, through out the middle-age the Silk Route traversing the Northern areas of today's Pakistan was famous for providing the only trade linkage between China on the one hand and the Middle East and Europe on the other.
Pakistan today has built on its glorious tradition and developed a highly competitive repertoire of export items. Some of our leading exports are:-
Cotton yarn, Farbrics, Garments, Cotton Made-up Articles, bedwear, Towels, Art Silk and Synthetic Textile, Rice, Leather and Leather Products, Leather Footwear, Sports Goods, Carpet and Rugs, Surgical Instruments, Meat and Meat Preparations, Fish and Fish Preparations, Fruits, Chemical and Pharmaceuticals, Engineering Goods, Marble and Onex, Granite, Gems and Jewellery, Precious and Semi Precious Stones, Cutlery, Watch and Clock.
TEXTILES
Pakistan produces the whole range of textile products especially cotton based textiles from yarn to fabric to finished garments to knitwear, linen, towels, home textiles. In spite of a large domestic market there is a huge exportable surplus of these products which are exported all over the world, the major markets being European and United States. The fact that we grow our own cotton, have a fully vertical and horizontal integrated industry alongwith a highly skilled workforce ensures a comparative advantage to our textile products.
To the all cotton base has been added man-made fibre resulting in a variety of blended fabric and textile products of the highest quality. It should come as no surprise that many of the top brand names in the US & EU market would have a "Made in Pakistan" label.
RICE
Pakistan's second largest staple food crop, rice, is a source of foreign exchange earnings. At the end of the eighties, Pakistan followed the USA and Thailand as the third largest rice exporting country in the world. The long grain sweet smelling rice called basmati is grown only in parts of Pakistan. The peculiar soil, climate and farming techniques combine to produce this world-renowned variety of rice, which is a gourmet's dream. Basmati rice is now available in most super markets in the US.
